Boris Johnson’s resignation is welcomed by Volt Europa.
His flawed political agenda resulted in a broken relationship with Europe, a threat to UK democracy and serious human rights breaches.
The departure of Boris Johnson should be an opportunity for the Conservative Party to make right and bring integrity and values back to their political project, and to mend broken promises. With the current candidates running for Tory leadership, however, we fear that there will be no change of course for the future of the UK and Europe.
None of the candidates that have put themselves forward have given any indication that they want to improve the UK's relations with the EU. Instead, they continue to use the hardline English nationalist position taken by Boris Johnson. For example, each candidate has said that they will "complete Brexit". One of their ways to do so is by removing the Northern Ireland Protocol - putting them in direct confrontation with Ireland, the EU, and the US, by threatening the Good Friday Agreement.
Some candidates, invoked by the legal fight concerning the Rwanda policy, are suggesting that the UK should leave the European Court of Human Rights, joining Russia and Belarus as the only European countries outside of the ECHR. This represents a huge risk to human rights in the UK, and will damage the UK's international reputation even further.
Volt UK continues to expose the lies of Brexit, and how all of Britain's current problems have been caused by or exacerbated by Brexit. By working together with Pro-EU organisations and parties across the UK, Volt is helping to change the discussion around Brexit.
The current crisis in British politics highlights the need for Proportional Representation, which Volt UK has always advocated for. The Conservatives have a huge political majority in the House of Commons, even though a significant proportion of the UK population didn't vote for them. The Labour Party are now pro-Brexit because they're worried about losing the election. Volt UK and other political parties across the UK are growing because British people are tired of the same style of politics. But, we can't achieve proper electoral success without Proportional Representation. The next General Election needs to be fought on the grounds of advocating for Proportional Representation, as well as a strategic alliance to get the current Conservative government out of power.
This is why it is so important to stand with us in our movement for a progressive Britain and a united Europe. Now more than ever do we need to stand together. Get involved in Volt UK and make your voice heard!
