DefCom (Defence and Security Community) vacancies

Meet the team dynamics

The DefCom organizational team operates with a clear, shared structure that enables collaboration, ownership, and focus. This entire structure is designed to ensure that each volunteer can contribute in a manageable way. Together as a community, we do our utmost to make politics engaging and accessible for all our members, ensuring their ideas and visions reach our elected officials.

  • The community is led by two Co-Chairs, who are responsible for overall coordination, strategic direction, and representing DefCom within Volt Europa and beyond.

  • To strengthen and grow the community itself, there are two Community Building Leads and two Community Expansion Leads. The Community Building Leads focus on engaging and activating existing members, while the Community Expansion Leads work on attracting new members and increasing visibility.

  • Two Substantive Support Leads are responsible for supporting the community on substance by organizing expert sessions and structuring knowledge.

  • The two Advising Elected Officials Leads serve as key connectors between the community and Volt’s elected representatives on the topic of defence and security. They also coordinate a network of four relationship managers, each assigned to a different political level (European, national, regional, or local).

Thematic work within DefCom is driven by topic moderators, each responsible for a specific cluster. Currently, six topic moderators are active across three core areas:

  • Command and Control (2 moderators)

  • Cooperation and Integration (2 moderators)

  • Whole-of-Society Approaches (2 moderators)

These moderators foster knowledge exchange, facilitate discussions, and track policy developments within their domains. They form the thematic backbone of the community.

In short, DefCom functions as an open and driven network with clearly defined roles where young people and experts collaborate on building a credible, progressive, and pan-European vision for defence and security.

Co-Chair (f/d)

We are looking for a female or diverse Co-Chair to join the DefCom leadership. As Co-Chair, you will work alongside the current Co-Chair, Merlijn Beene, and play a central role in driving the strategic development of the community, coordinating teams, and inspiring engagement across Europe.

Community Building Co-Lead (f/d)

We are looking for a female or gender-diverse Community Building Co-Lead to energize and connect our growing European network. In this role, you will focus on strengthening internal cohesion, ensuring meaningful dialogue, and fostering a strong sense of belonging.

Relationship Manager – Advising Elected Officials (Subteam #3)

As a Relationship Manager, you will serve as a key liaison between DefCom and Volt’s elected officials. Your job is to support and guide community-generated ideas—often coming from the topic moderators—and translate them into feasible, strategic input that elected officials can act on.
