About DefCom

The DefCom organizational team operates with a clear, shared structure that enables collaboration, ownership, and focus. This entire structure is designed to ensure that each volunteer can contribute in a manageable way. Together, we strive to make politics engaging and accessible for all our members, ensuring their ideas and visions reach Volt’s elected officials.

DefCom is led by two Co-Chairs who are responsible for coordination, strategy, and representation. The community consists of three subteams — Community Building & Expansion, Substantive Support, and Advising Elected Officials — and is thematically structured around three topic clusters:

  • Command and Control (2 moderators)

  • Cooperation and Integration (2 moderators)

  • Whole-of-Society Approaches (2 moderators)

Role Overview

We are looking for a female or diverse Co-Chair to join the DefCom leadership. As Co-Chair, you will work alongside the current Co-Chair, Merlijn Beene, and play a central role in driving the strategic development of the community, coordinating teams, and inspiring engagement across Europe.

This is a unique opportunity to lead a pan-European thematic community focused on shaping a credible, progressive European vision for defence and security.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and implement strategic plans to grow and energize the DefCom community.

  • Facilitation: Oversee the work of subteams and topic groups, ensuring collaboration and shared direction.

  • Cross-level Coordination: Align community efforts with elected officials across local, national, and European levels.

  • Community Engagement: Motivate members, stimulate discussion, and encourage initiative and ownership.

  • Expansion Efforts: Broaden the reach of DefCom, especially by attracting and involving members from across Europe.

What We Are Looking For

  • Leadership Skills: Strong communicator, motivator, and organizer.

  • Community-Oriented: Proactive in involving others and building connections.

  • Passionate About Defence & Security: Motivated to shape Europe’s future in this domain.

  • Team Player: Enjoys working in diverse, collaborative environments.

  • Diverse Leadership: To promote gender balance, this role is open to female or diverse candidates.

What You’ll Gain

  • Impact: Play a key role in shaping Volt’s defence and security agenda.

  • Network: Connect with motivated volunteers and political representatives across Europe.

  • Growth: Develop leadership skills in a structured yet innovative environment.
