European Thematic Communities Lead (F/D)

The Thematic Communities Lead is responsible for establishing and supporting Volt’s Thematic Communities. Volt Communities are informal groupings of Volt members working on a variety of grassroots activities, from policy development to project building and execution, outreach and engagement with external parties. Essentially, they bring Volt’s ideas and policies into the ‘real world’, changing society for the better. The Thematic Communities Lead ensures that Thematic Community core teams have access to the support and resources they need to operate, and facilitates communication between the Communities and EUR Policy Team.

As this is a new role to support the newly established initiative of Thematic Communities, there is considerable scope for creativity. Responsibilities will evolve over time and be shaped by the Communities Lead(s) themselves.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the development of Thematic Communities, guiding core teams through the process of establishing a Community, and providing advice on setting up internal structures and communication channels, defining priorities and achieving impact.

  • Act as the main contact point between individual Communities and the EUR Policy Team.

  • Maintain a clear overview of all Communities, identify areas of overlap, and promote collaboration on policy issues where needed.

  • Work with the EUR Policy Communications Lead to promote the activities of Thematic Communities within Volt.

  • Part of the European Community Coordination Team, you'll work with other community teams and leads to ensure and promote collaboration between communities across Europe.

  • Support Communities during policy cycles, linking them with members of the Policy Support Team and Editorial Team to ensure their work can be formed into coherent, effective policy.

  • Ensure that Thematic Communities work collaboratively with other types of Volt Community.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience in community building and leading teams, and the ability to motivate and inspire volunteers.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong project management skills, able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Good IT skills and the ability to recognise how technology can be used to facilitate Community discussion and development.

  • English language competence at CEFR level C1 or above. (The working language of Volt Europa’s EUR Policy and Community Team is English.)

  • A commitment to upholding principles of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your work, including the channels through which policy is made.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of European politics,  and current events, and a commitment to diversity, progressive values and principles.

  • Working knowledge of other European languages.

  • An already active Volt member with knowledge of Volt’s internal workings and ability to navigate Volt’s online platforms.

Please note that this is an unpaid volunteering position. The Thematic Communities Lead is expected to commit 5-10 hours a week to the role. As this is a new role, a greater time commitment may be required initially to get the project up and running.

Volt Europa actively seeks a diverse applicant pool and encourages candidates of all backgrounds to apply. Volt Europa does not discriminate on the basis of disability, age, gender identity and expression, national origin, race or ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or criminal record.
