Since March 2021, Laurens Dassen has been the party leader for Volt in the House of Representatives. Below, Laurens tells us more about himself

My name is Laurens Dassen, 38 years old, and I come from the Brabant village of Knegsel. Since March 2021 I have been (thanks to your vote!) the party leader for Volt in the House of Representatives. That year I also moved to The Hague with my girlfriend. We now live here with our son.

In 2018 I joined Volt because I was concerned about the growing nationalism and populism. The challenges of today go far beyond our country and require cooperation and European solutions. It is therefore time for a new generation in politics that really wants to tackle problems! 

In the House of Representatives, I am committed to every European. Because whether you live in Groningen or Palermo, in Aachen or in Vilnius, for every European it is true: it is time for Europe to work for everyone, for a better future. To achieve that, we need a social, sustainable and democratic Europe. 

If we dare to work together across borders, we can turn the challenges of the 21st century into opportunities. Then we can tackle the climate crisis and ensure a liveable planet. Then we can receive refugees in a humane way. Then we can protect our democracy and the rule of law. Then we can invest in education. Then we can ensure that everyone benefits from economic progress.
