Ukraine needs to be part of the European Union!

Volt Europa urges the EU and its member states to promptly grant Ukraine EU membership candidate status.

The official candidacy of Ukraine to the EU is now pending with the European Council. The EU has a duty to answer this with due haste, granting Ukraine candidate status is the least we can do. 

The Russian invasion of Ukraine heralds a new era in European and international politics. To stay true to our core values, the European Union has to adjust. Volt firmly believes that the EU has to show it is more than just an economic union and that core values are worth more than immediate financial interests. 

According to a recent poll, 86% of Ukrainians are in favor of joining the EU. And when Ukraine signed the Association Agreement in 2014, it aimed at becoming a membership candidate by 2020. Granting them their wish would just be the logical next step in our partnership with Ukraine.

In the end, Ukraine is fighting for a European future, granting membership candidate status is more than just a “symbolic deed”; it is a sign of hope for a peaceful and prosperous future for Ukraine.
