Healthy Food and Sustainable Agriculture Policy Trainee for the Volt Europa delegation in the European Parliament (f/m/d)

Volt Europa is looking for a trainee to support our team’s agri-food work within the European Parliament. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks in the areas of strategy development, legislative and communication work, stakeholder engagement, communication and event organization, with a specific focus on healthy diets and protein diversification.

This is an opportunity to gain first-hand experience learning about the role of an MEP, navigating the complexities of EU food agricultural ecosystem, and driving progressive food policies in a fast-paced, fun, and multi-cultural environment.

Do you want to contribute to Europe's future?

Volt stands for a united and federal Europe, where everyone has equal opportunities to fulfil their unique potential. We strive to achieve the highest human, environmental, social, and technological development together. We are a pan-European political movement with 200 elected representatives across Europe, including 5 members of the European Parliament, over 30,000 members and hundreds of volunteers who work hard to make our vision a reality.

Volt is an inclusive movement that wants to provide space for everyone to thrive. We believe the power of diversity achieves better results for our society at large. We can only be the inclusive political movement we aspire to be, if we represent different voices and perspectives in our society. Your skin colour, gender identity, disabilities, sexual orientation or religious belief do not matter. You are welcome in our organisation, and we want to work together with you to create a better Europe for everyone.

What will you do?

  •    Develop a strategy with an emphasis on policy and communication to build Anna Strolenberg's profile, specifically on healthy food.

  •     Support our work on protein diversification within the European Parliament, helping to coordinate meetings, track initiatives, and come up with communication proposals and help with executing them.

  •     Monitor and follow key food and agricultural legislative files, like the Common Market Organisation (CMO), Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), public procurement etc., and how they intersect with public health.

  •     Help organize events and related outreach activities like field trips, focused on food innovation, and the transition to healthier European diets.

  •     Assist with our shadow file on the Food and Feed Omnibus regulation, specifically from the health angle.

  •     Research and produce briefing notes, reports, articles, speeches, and speaking points to support our work in the AGRI committee.

  •     Engage with stakeholders, from public health NGOs and consumer rights organizations to agrifood entrepreneurs, to ensure a variety of perspectives are taken into account.

What skills do you need to excel in this role?

Research shows that (oftentimes) female candidates only apply when they meet 100% of the requirements, while male candidates do so when they meet just 60%. We explicitly encourage everyone to apply: you don’t have to tick every box to apply. We also consider your potential and motivation! We value equity of opportunity and do not expect a trainee to arrive with 10 years of working experience.

  •    Knowledge of European politics, agricultural and food policy issues, and current events, combined with a strong commitment to healthy and sustainable foods linked to societal and political dynamics.

  •     A proactive mindset, you like to take leadership on the topics, come up with new ideas, and develop a project from start to end.

  •     Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

  •     Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  •     Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.

What requirements do we ask for this role?

  •     English language competence at CEFR level C1 or above (the Volt Europa delegation’s working language is English).

  •     Residency in Brussels or a willingness to relocate.

What do we offer?

  •    Monthly gross salary of €1.675 (highest possible trainee allowance from the European Parliament)

  •     First-hand experience in the office of a Volt Europa MEP.

  •     The opportunity to develop deep expertise on health, food, agriculture, and the EU legislative process and political communication.

  •     A purpose-driven work environment, underpinned by our shared commitment to the European project.

  •     A fun, young, and international team.
