Join Volt Europa’s Arbitration Committee

Volt is looking for thoughtful, fair-minded, and independent volunteers to join the Arbitration Committee, the body responsible for resolving internal disputes and helping uphold the association’s rules, fairness, and trust.

The committee handles cases concerning the interpretation and application of Volt’s statutes and internal regulations, including appeals and the review of decisions by internal bodies.

What you’ll do

As an Arbitrator, you will help resolve internal compliance disputes in a way that is fair, efficient, and just. This includes reviewing disputes between bodies of the association, appeals against sanctions, membership-related appeals, election-related disputes, and other cases assigned under Volt’s internal rules.

You may contribute to:

  • Reviewing written requests and responses.

  • Participating in hearings, fact-finding, and deliberations.

  • Assessing evidence and procedural fairness.

  • Contributing to well-reasoned written decisions.

  • Protecting confidentiality and the rights of all parties throughout the process.

Who we’re looking for

This role is for people who are calm under pressure, analytically strong, and committed to independence and due process. Arbitrators are expected to exercise independent judgment without fear or favour, avoid conflicts of interest, and maintain the highest standards of integrity.

Strong candidates will bring:

  • Excellent legal reasoning and sound judgment.

  • The ability to assess complex situations fairly and objectively.

  • Strong discretion and respect for confidentiality.

  • The confidence to act independently in sensitive and sometimes high-stakes matters.

  • Candidates will need to make time available at short notice for emergency hearings.

Hard requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Arbitrators must be in the process of obtaining or have obtained a master’s-level law degree, or be a qualified lawyer.

  • Arbitrators cannot be part of any other body of the Association.

  • They may not be employed by the Association.

In addition, the committee is composed of five Individual Members, no two Arbitrators may come from the same Member Association, and a majority of members must be EU Individual Members. The committee also follows gender-balance rules set out in the regulations.

Practical details

Arbitrators are elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term and may be re-elected. The working language of the committee is English, and members may be asked to act in urgent proceedings, including fast-turnaround electoral appeals or interim measures.

Why apply

This is a chance to make a real contribution to Volt’s democratic health and institutional trust. At a time when governance systems are under pressure, strong and independent Arbitrators can make a decisive difference in helping the association act fairly, consistently, and credibly.
